ANANTAPUR: The early onset of the southwest monsoon into Andhra Pradesh via Anantapur on Monday brought much-needed relief to people, marking an early end to the peak summer. Anantapur and parts of the Rayalaseema region received rains, continuing the wet spell from the past two weeks due to cyclone impact. As a clear sign of monsoon entry, heavy rains and gusty winds lashed Anantapur, Kadapa, and Sri Satya Sai districts. District administrations issued alerts to residents in low-lying areas about possible inundation, especially in urban localities.Known for severe drought and water scarcity, districts like Anantapur, Kadapa, Annamayya, and Satya Sai are experiencing a pleasant climate due to the early rains. Major irrigation tanks have reached full capacity, and the Tungabhadra reservoir has recorded inflows of around 10 TMC ft—unusual during the dry season.Experts expect Krishna and Pennar basins to receive increased inflows, with reservoirs like TB Dam and Srisailam likely to benefit early. Over 50 tanks in Anantapur and Satya Sai districts are already overflowing, encouraging timely agricultural activity. Anantapur, the country’s top groundnut-growing region, is expected to benefit significantly, as officials anticipate a better crop season after years of losses due to rain deficit.
