DGP Orders AP Police To Tighten Noose On Online Betting

VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh director general of police Harish Kumar Gupta on Sunday conducted a comprehensive review of online crimes with district superintendents of police across the state, particularly in light of the ongoing IPL season. Harish Kumar reiterated AP’s zero-tolerance policy against all forms of online gaming linked to betting and gambling. He directed field officers to intensify surveillance and ensure strict enforcement against the illegal betting activities, including stringent legal action against violators. The DGP said police units have already escalated operations to dismantle gambling networks. Authorities have warned clubs, establishments or premises facilitating betting of facing immediate closure. Illegal dens will be raided without exception. Online betting websites and mobile applications are under active surveillance, with steps being taken to block and dismantle them in coordination with stakeholder agencies. Strict action is being initiated against bookies, agents and individuals involved, treating them as being involved in organised crime. Cases are being registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and bank accounts linked to betting transactions are being identified and frozen. Those aiding or abetting such activities will also face legal consequences. Harish Kumar asked police commissioners and SPs to deal with repeat offenders firmly through preventive detention and externment proceedings. Properties linked to illegal betting will be identified and attached as per law. He mentioned that special enforcement drives are going on during the IPL season, including checks at lodges, hotels and public places. Police are strengthening intelligence gathering at village and ward levels, while special teams have been formed to dismantle organised networks. The DGP underlined that police authorities are keeping a close watch on social media platforms to curb promotions related to betting, alongside awareness campaigns to educate youth on risks associated with betting, including imprisonment.
