CPI Flags Democracy Challenges in India

Hyderabad: The Communist Party of India warned that democracy in India was facing severe challenges and dangers and that the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar is a symptom of this clear and present danger.“The Election Commission of India is no longer functioning as per its constitutional mandate. And ever since the BJP came to power and Modi became the PM, the Constitution has been under attack. India cannot become a Hindutva nation, a ‘Hindu Rashtra’. If this is allowed to happen, it will be a big calamity for the country. And we are facing this calamity now,” CPI general secretary D Raja has said.Raja was addressing the CPI Telangana state conference in Gajularamam.“Our appeal to all parties is that we must all work together to remove BJP from power. Modi must be removed from the PM post. Our country is passing through a very critical and challenging time. The very fundamental right of our citizens, the right to vote, is now under threat,” he said.Raja warned that what happened in Bihar with lakhs of names being removed from the electoral lists can happen in other states too. Next year, we will have elections in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and some other states. We have a long-drawn battle ahead of us including the Vice-President election against the BJP-RSS candidate. The CPI supports the I.N.D.I.A. bloc’s candidate justice B. Sudershan Reddy. If Suderhsan Reddy wins it will be a huge landmark, and will impact the future political course of India,” Raja said. The Telangana CPI state secretary and MLA Kunamaneni Sambasiva Rao said “the party is strong in the state. It has an MLA and an MLC. But this is not enough. We need to further strengthen the party.”
