Nalgonda: Tense and emotional scenes unfolded at the Suryapet Town Police Station on Wednesday when several couples — who had unknowingly bought trafficked infants and raised them for over a year — were asked to hand the children over to authorities.Following the arrest of a 13-member child-trafficking gang, police ordered all adoptive couples linked to the network to bring the children in for verification. Ten infants arrived with their caregivers, many of whom broke down as officers took the children into protective custody. At one point, a group of distraught parents staged a brief sit-in outside the station, with some threatening self-harm if the babies were not returned. Officers persuaded them to disperse after assuring that each case would be reviewed according to legal adoption rules.A couple from Kethepally mandal in Nalgonda district said they had paid ₹4 lakh for a 25-day-old baby and had “formed an unbreakable bond” over the past 18 months. Another pair from Telkumatla, who bought a two-month-old infant and raised the child for a year, told reporters they could not imagine life without the baby.Police officials said the children, all under two, were transferred to the Shishu Gruha in Nalgonda and will remain there until the Child Welfare Committee completes parentage verification and begins formal adoption proceedings.
