Pune: April, the first month of this financial year, has shown a mixed sales performance across major competing car brands in the world’s third largest car market after China and the US. While sales at Maruti Suzuki, India’s biggest car maker, rose 7 per cent last month, Hyundai and Tata Motors reported sales decline. On the other hand, sales at Mahindra and Kia showed strong growth, led by its SUV segment. Toyota Kirloskar Motor and JSW MG Motor also experienced significant sales uptick, with Windsor EV leading in its pack. Total sales at Maruti Suzuki jumped 7 per cent to 1,79,791 units, from 1,68,089 units in April 2024. But its domestic passenger vehicle sales saw only a marginal rise from 1,37,952 units to 1,38,704 units. Rival Hyundai Motor, however, saw its total sales decline by 5 per cent to 60,774 units last month, down from 63,701 units last year. Meanwhile, Hyundai also crossed the 9 million cumulative sales milestone in India since 1996. Mahindra & Mahindra’s sports utility vehicle sales climbed 28 per cent to 52,330 units, up from 41,008 units sold last year. “Building on the strong momentum of last year’s performance, we began the year on a strong note in April. These numbers indicate the strength of our portfolio and customer offerings,” said Veejay Nakra, President, Automotive Division, M&M Ltd. Sales at Kia India also soared 18.3 per cent to 23,623 units in April, up from 19,968 units sold last year.
