Amazon is shutting down its Shanghai Artificial Intelligence lab, according to a report by The Financial Times.This decision comes amid rising tensions between the United States and China.Wang Minjie, a scientist at the Shanghai lab, said in a WeChat post that his team was being dissolved due to strategic adjustments related to U.S.-China relations, The Financial Times reported.The Shanghai lab was established in 2018 by Amazon Web Services (AWS). While the lab’s current headcount is unclear, the report noted that AWS employed over 1,000 people in China at its peak.This development comes at a time when tech giants including Meta and Microsoft have announced layoffs as they ramp up investment in artificial intelligence.
