Alibaba has announced the launch of an open-source artificial intelligence model for software development, called Qwen3-Coder. The Chinese e-commerce giant described the model as its most advanced coding tool to date, amid intensifying competition among Chinese tech companies in the AI space. According to a company statement, Qwen3-Coder is designed for tasks such as code generation and managing complex coding workflows. Alibaba also said the model excels in “agentic AI coding tasks”, where AI systems operate autonomously to tackle programming challenges. The company released performance data indicating that Qwen3-Coder outperforms domestic competitors such as DeepSeek and Moonshot AI. It also claimed that Qwen3-Coder matches the performance of leading U.S. models in certain areas, including Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s GPT-4.
