Lokayukta Shuts Prakasam Sand Mining Cases After Probe

KURNOOL: The Andhra Pradesh Lokayukta has disposed of two complaints (1238/2021/B1 and 1301/2021/B1 – suo motu) related to illegal sand mining in Prakasam district, following an inquiry by Upa Lokayukta Justice P. Rajani. The probe found large-scale sand excavation beyond permitted limits, illegal transportation and negligence by officials. It also established that BSCPL Infrastructure Limited had extracted sand in excess of approved quantities, leading to the imposition of a substantial penalty.Acting on the Lokayukta’s recommendations, the government initiated disciplinary action against erring officials. A former deputy director of mines and geology was penalised with withholding of two annual increments with cumulative effect. Two police officials—an inspector from the Special Enforcement Bureau and a sub-inspector—were awarded penalties of withholding increments for two years without cumulative effect. The Lokayukta noted that ₹3 crore has already been recovered from the company in compliance with directions of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh in W.P. No. 35899/2015.Observing that disciplinary action has been taken and part of the penalty recovered, the Lokayukta said no further intervention is required and closed the complaints, while recommending strict compliance with court directions and re-examination of the case for appropriate penalties.
