Amaravati: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday stated that reforms are being introduced only for public benefit and that technology should be fully utilized for the implementation of those reforms. He emphasized that continuous study should be carried out on generating electricity at lower cost. At a meeting, Naidu reviewed the summer power supply and the procurement plan for 2026-27 apart from the implementation of PM Surya Ghar and PM Kusum schemes.Officials said that daily demand during summer is estimated to be between 275 and 285 million units. They revealed that 6,397 million units of electricity have been consumed so far this month. They stated that electricity consumption has increased by about 14 percent compared to last year.Officials explained that, along with summer, increased industrial usage also contributed to the rise in electricity consumption. Officials briefed Naidu on electricity purchase plans for the next six months. They said that while the electricity purchase price was Rs. 5.20 per unit in April 2025, it had been reduced to Rs. 4.90 by March 2026.Officials also informed the Chief Minister about the implementation of PM Surya Ghar and PM Kusum schemes. Naidu said the cost of electricity purchases must come down and added that officials should focus on all possible measures in that direction.“We must study the new innovations being implemented in the power sector in different countries. By the end of this year, the electricity purchase price should be reduced to Rs.4.60. Electricity department officials should focus on this. Reforms are being implemented in the power sector and every other sector only with the intention of benefiting the people,” he said.To benefit the public, the use of technology is extremely necessary. The Electricity Department must constantly remember this and greater importance should be given to research and analysis in the electricity sector. For this, organizations like Transco and Genco should allocate their CSR funds. If necessary, we will take steps to ensure budget allocations from the state government. A full-scale study should be conducted on power generation through the pumped storage method.Steps should be taken to establish an Energy University and focus should be laid on environmentally friendly electricity generation that reduces pollution. By 2028-29, more than half of electricity production should come through renewable energy.“Under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, we have so far provided 52,396 solar rooftop connections. This should be accelerated further. From now on, we should ensure 2 lakh PM Surya Ghar connections every month,” he added.“Under the PM Kusum scheme, we have so far provided 2.94 lakh connections. The first phase of the PM Kusum scheme should be completed by the end of December. Charging stations should be established across the state. Large-scale public awareness should be created regarding the use and purchase of electric vehicles,” Naidu said.
