Moscow: The Kremlin on Thursday brushed off the impact of the United States not extending a sanctions waiver on Russia’s seaborne oil exports, put in place last month to help ease global energy markets amid the war in the Middle East. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Wednesday that Washington would not extend the waiver, which applied to Russian oil already at sea. “This could have been expected,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in response to a question by AFP during a daily briefing. “For years now, we have been living under the burden of sanctions… we have already learned to act in such a way to minimise the impact,” he added. The measure was aimed at softening global supply shocks from the US-Israeli war against Iran. Tehran has retaliated by effectively closing off the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for energy shipments. Oil prices have since surged, squeezing countries and especially those dependent on energy exports from the region. US gasoline prices have similarly jumped. Russia has been one of the big financial winners from the conflict — nearly doubling its earnings from oil exports in March to $19 billion, the International Energy Agency said earlier this week.
