Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro, captured by the US, is connected with India. He has an Indian connection through his wife, Cilia Flores, who is a devotee of Sathya Sai Baba. Though raised Catholic, Maduro was introduced to the Indian spiritual leader through Flores before their marriage. Reportedly, the couple visited Prashanti Nilayam ashram in Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh, in 2005 to meet Sathya Sai Baba. An image from that visit shows a young Maduro and Flores seated on the floor alongside the spiritual leader during their meeting. Reportedly, after Maduro rose to power, a portrait of Sai Baba was hung inside his private office alongside Simon Bolivar and Hugo Chavez, in Miraflores Palace. In 2011, after the Indian godman died, Maduro, who was foreign minister of Venezuela then, ensured that the government passed an official condolence resolution. Accordingly, Venezuela’s National Assembly passed an official condolence resolution and declared a day of national mourning, recognizing the godman’s spiritual contribution to humanity. Under Maduro’s rule, the Sathya Sai organization has continued to operate in Venezuela. Venezuela hosts one of the largest Sai Baba devotee communities in Latin America. In 2024, Maduro’s government sent out invitations for its National Day Celebrations featuring a symobol of ‘Om’. Maduro described Sai Baba as a “being of light” in an official statement.
