KARIMNAGAR: Fear has gripped villages on the outskirts of Karimnagar district as a male tiger continues to roam the region. Forest department officials, led by district forest officer Ch. Balamani, have confirmed the presence of the big cat in the areas of Bahadur Khanpet and Vedurugatta. Officials said the tiger was recently spotted taking shelter in a maize field and is believed to have moved towards the nearby hillocks or possibly strayed into the neighbouring Peddapalli district during the night. The tiger’s presence was officially confirmed following an attack on a buffalo belonging to farmer Boganda Rahudu on the outskirts of Jubli Nagar. The buffalo was attacked on December 28 and succumbed to injuries on January 1 while undergoing treatment. Forest range officer S.K. Shoukath Hussain requested the veterinary assistant surgeon to conduct a post-mortem examination to ascertain the cause of death. Special teams have been deployed, and drone cameras are being used to track the tiger’s movement, though no direct visual has been obtained in the past 24 hours. Meanwhile, forest officials are probing the tiger’s origin, as Karimnagar is not a traditional tiger habitat. While leopards have been sighted in the Gangadhara hills over the past 25 years, sightings of a tiger are rare. Officials suspect the animal may have travelled over 300 km from either the Kawal Tiger Reserve or forest areas in Maharashtra, passing through Jayashankar Bhupalpally and Peddapalli districts. The forest department has issued a strict advisory for residents and farmers in Choppadandi and Karimnagar mandals, asking them to avoid visiting fields between 5 pm and 7 am. People have been advised to move in groups and make noise if venturing out is unavoidable. Village youth have been enlisted as volunteers to assist in night patrolling and to report fresh pugmarks immediately.
