Visakhapatnam: The “Abhyudayam Cycle Yatra – Pedal for a Drug-Free Future,” began its journey from Payakaraopeta in Anakapalli district and reached Paidibhimavaram in Ranasthalam mandal, Srikakulam district, on Monday. The Yatra, with a presence of 25 police personnel, was inaugurated by Visakhapatnam Range DIG Gopinath Jetti. It traversed through the Vizianagaram and Parvathipuram Manyam districts before its culmination in Ichchapuram, Srikakulam district. The first-of-its-kind initiative in Andhra Pradesh covers approximately 1,000km across five districts in the Visakhapatnam Range. The participants are conducting awareness programmes at schools, colleges, villages, and major junctions about the dangers of narcotics and illegal drug trafficking. The event featured student flash mobs, folk dances, traditional art performances, skits, and songs highlighting marijuana’s harmful effects. Residents, students, employees and public representatives turned out in support of the initiative. District SP Maheshwara Reddy said individuals caught using or illegally transporting narcotics like marijuana would lose their job opportunities. The authorities established a toll-free helpline, 1972, for reporting drug-related information, guaranteeing confidentiality for informants. Citizens can also contact emergency numbers 112 and 100. DIG Gopinath Jetti said drug use destroys youths’ future while illegal marijuana trafficking fuels criminal networks. Money from this illegal trade pushes young people into crime and strengthens dangerous forces that destabilize society, he noted. The DIG outlined the strict measures being implemented, including close monitoring of border routes and stringent legal punishment without leniency for traffickers. “Every family – every village – every city must be drug-free.”
