Heavy Rain Lashes Jammu for Third Consecutive Day

Heavy rainfall has been lashing Jammu for the third consecutive day, causing widespread flooding in several areas. The Modhopur barrage has overflowed, crossing the one lakh cusec mark, and is continuously rising. This has triggered heavy flooding in low-lying areas along the Ravi river in Kathua district.

Water levels in several rivers, including the Taranah River, Ujh River, Maggar Khad, Sahar Khad, Ravi River, and their tributaries in Kathua, are rising and nearing the danger mark. The Tawi river has crossed the 20 feet danger mark in Udhampur district, while in Jammu it is flowing below the alert level. The Chenab river is also flowing close to the warning level in Jammu.

In Samba, the Basanter River has crossed the danger mark of 4.5 feet. The meteorological department has recorded the highest rainfall in Kathua district at 155.6 mm in the last 24 hours, followed by Bhaderwah in Doda at 99.8 mm, Jammu at 81.5 mm, and Katra at 68.8 mm.

Authorities have issued advisories, warning people to stay away from water bodies and landslide-prone areas due to the weather forecast predicting moderate to heavy rainfall in several districts, including Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Reasi, Udhampur, Rajouri, Ramban, Doda, and Kishtwar. The forecast also predicts the possibility of cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides in high-altitude areas till August 27.

Traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has been suspended due to the heavy rainfall and flooding.
