Congress Questions Government on Nuclear Energy Promises

The government’s plans to boost nuclear energy through amendments to existing laws have been questioned by Congress leaders. The party expressed concern over the lack of progress on two key Bills, which were expected to be introduced in the recent session of Parliament. However, these Bills were not presented, leaving uncertainty about their introduction in the upcoming Winter session.

Congress leader Ramesh emphasized the need for an independent regulatory body to oversee nuclear energy, which is crucial for attracting private investment. He also highlighted the significance of maintaining the integrity of the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act, 2010, which was finalized with the support of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and other key leaders. The proposed amendments, Ramesh argued, would undermine the progress made in this area.
