Fake Nursing Home Owner Arrested after Mother, Newborn Die

Bhubaneswar: Police in Odisha’s Ganjam district has arrested the proprietor of a nursing home for allegedly conducting a delivery without any medical qualifications, leading to the deaths of both a mother and her newborn. The accused, Mangulu Charan Pradhan (35) of Dengausta village, was picked up on Sunday from his home following a complaint lodged by the victim’s husband, Babu Nayak of Korakhandi, officials said.Investigators revealed that on May 11, Pradhan, assisted by two auxiliary nurse midwives (ANMs), attempted the delivery at his nursing home in Digapahandi without the presence of any licensed doctor. The woman, Roji Nayak, was admitted after being assured by the nursing home staff that the facility was fully equipped for a safe childbirth.“After nearly four hours of labour, the delivery was carried out by the accused and the newborn was declared dead shortly after birth. The mother’s condition deteriorated rapidly, and she died while being rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital,” said Digapahandi police inspector-in-charge Prasant Kumar Patra. Both ANMs involved—Madhusmita Pattanayak and Pramodini Gamango—have already been arrested, on May 19 and August 10 respectively. With Pradhan’s arrest, police said, all prime accused in the case were in custody.
