KURNOOL: Plans for constructing an Outer Ring Road (ORR) around Kurnool city have once again gained momentum. The project, originally conceived to ease traffic congestion within the city, had seen little progress during the previous government’s tenure. Now, the district administration has taken up fresh efforts to push the proposal forward. District collector P. Ranjit Basha has directed the Kurnool municipal commissioner to send proposals regarding the ORR to the government after obtaining approval from the municipal general body. The ORR will connect Peddapadu to the Hyderabad National Highway. Traffic congestion has been a major concern in the city, particularly at the busy Bellary Road junction. Vehicles coming from Peddapadu and entering the highway towards either Bengaluru or Hyderabad have to pass through Bellary Chowrasta, which has turned into a serious bottleneck. To address this, Minister T.G. Bharath had earlier planned a loop road from Hyderabad Road to the new bus stand through a small bypass. However, this has not significantly reduced the problem. The proposed ORR is now seen as a more viable solution that could provide real relief from the growing traffic congestion. The earlier ORR alignment had been planned from St. Joseph’s College on Sunkesula Road to Roza Dargah through Sankalbagh, Saibaba Gudi, Raghavendra Swamy Mutt and via Rambhotla Temple to Old City, Joharapuram, and along the Tungabhadra River. The new ORR route is yet to be decided by the district administration. Some works related to the ORR had been initiated in the past. Authorities laid roads from Roza Dargah to Saibaba Temple and from Raghavendra Mutt to Rambhotla Temple near the river. Despite significant expenditure, these roads have not been fully utilized. Several stretches had been left unused, with wild growth overtaking them. City residents are eagerly awaiting the ORR to ease traffic snarls within Kurnool.
