With a Hat-Trick of Flops…

With Yash Raj Films’ War 2 not doing well at the a box-office, Hrithik Roshan now has a hat-trick of flops — Vikram Vedha, Fighter and War 2 — each performing worse than the last. The big question circulating in the industry is whether the superstar’s reported fee of Rs 90 crore is still justified. A leading filmmaker who has worked with Hrithik was blunt: “Hrithik Roshan charging Rs 90–95 crores after three flops makes no sense. Akshay Kumar charges the same despite a string of disasters. At a time when a star-less film like Saiyaara has crossed Rs 300 crores and is still strong, the equation needs a rethink. In fact, from Monday onwards, shows of War 2 are being replaced by Saiyaara across the country.”Trade analyst Taran Adarsh agrees the failure is rooted in weak content. “War 2 had everything in its favour — cast, scale, stunts — but lacked soul. Without a gripping screenplay or emotional connect, the audience rejected it outright. The box-office numbers are shockingly low. It hasn’t just fallen short of Pathaan or Tiger from the same spy universe, but even of its own predecessor, War.”Adarsh admits the failure will impact Hrithik’s standing. “He hasn’t delivered a clean hit in a long time. The failure of War 2 is bound to affect him, though I believe he will bounce back. NTR is phenomenal, but in cinema, it’s the numbers that speak. Hopefully both will stage strong comebacks.”The lesson, he stresses, is clear: “Content must come first. The success of films like Mahavatar Narsimha and Saiyaara should be an eye-opener.”Meanwhile, Tiger Shroff, who co-starred with Hrithik in the successful War (2019), continues to back him: “How can you not appreciate an artist who has everything? Hrithik sir is the blueprint of gold standard.”
