A Year After RG Kar Case, Kolkata Braces For Fresh Stir

Kolkata: The city is going to witness fresh agitation on the completion of one year of the brutal rape and murder of the on-duty doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH) for justice in the sensational case. The biggest of the demonstrations will be ‘Nabanna Abhiyan’ by the BJP on Saturday when hundreds of opposition workers are expected to march to the state secretariat in Howrah in protest of the incident. Leader of the opposition Suvendu Adhikari and other prominent BJP functionaries are likely to participate in the rally. A heavy police deployment and huge barricades have been in place on all the roads leading to Nabanna. On Friday, ADG(law and order) Jawed Shamim, ADG (South Bengal) Supratim Sarkar, Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma and Howrah City Police chief Praveen Tripathi met at the state police headquarters Bhawani Bhavan. They made it clear that the rally to Nabanna would not be allowed due to prohibitory orders and offered two alternatives locations, Santragachi bus-stand in Howrah or Rani Rashmoni Avenue at Esplanade. Besides, various social forums and groups have also made plans for protests in memory of the victim. On August 9 in 2024, the young post graduate trainee, who was on night duty, was found dead after she raped by Kolkata Police civic volunteer Sanjay Rai. This triggered massive nationwide protests including a night vigil, Reclaim the Night, that stumped the ruling Trinamul Congress. The accused was arrested by the police and was later handed over along with the case to the CBI following the Calcutta High Court’s order. He was later convicted and sentenced by a trial court to life imprisonment. The victim’s family, along with the opposition parties, however suspect that he was not the lone accused and moved the Calcutta High Court for a fresh probe. Meanwhile, former RGKMCH principal Sandip Ghosh and four others, arrested by the CBI on corruption charges for financial irregularities at the state government hospital, are facing trial at the Alipore Court.
