Nalgonda: Locals rescued seven members of a family on Friday morning after the car they were travelling in became trapped in the fast-flowing Edulavagu stream at Nelapatla in Choutuppal mandal, Yadadri-Bhongir district. The vehicle was swept about four metres downstream before coming to rest against dense bushes near a culvert.Heavy rain on Thursday evening had caused Edulavagu to overflow onto the road’s outskirts. Unaware of the stream’s strength, the driver attempted to cross and lost control. Once the car lodged in the bushes, its occupants were able to open the doors and cling to nearby trees as the water reached three feet deep. Local residents quickly mobilised, securing a rope and pulling all seven to safety. The family had been travelling from Choutuppal to Valigonda to attend a wedding. Meanwhile, rising floodwaters in the Musi River forced the closure of the road between Bollepally and Sangam. Police erected barricades at both ends and barred all vehicles from the route. The river was also overflowing over the low-level bridge at Bheemalingala in Valigonda mandal, and inflows at the Musi project surged past 4,000 cusecs. District collector M. Hanumantha Rao surveyed the affected stretches between Bibinagar and Bhongir-Pochampally, ordering officials and police not to allow any crossings when water levels are high. He noted that heavy rains in Hyderabad and the opening of the Himayatsagar gates on Thursday night had contributed to the surge. No casualties or property losses have been reported so far. The revenue department has taken precautionary measures ahead of forecast heavy rains over the next 24 hours. The collector also urged villagers to avoid staying in old, dilapidated houses. In neighbouring Suryapet district, floodwaters severed the road link between Ananthagiri and Kodad. Pedda Cheruvu overflowed, submerging Shirdi Sai Nagar and Ganesh Nagar colonies, areas last flooded during heavy rains the previous year. Suryapet superintendent of police K. Narsimha inspected the Musi bridge at Bheemaram, which connects Suryapet and Miryalaguda, and warned residents not to attempt crossing any flooded streams or enter the river to fish. He also urged people in the villages of Suryapet rural, Penpahad, Nereducherla, and Palakeedu, located along the Musi’s course, to remain vigilant.
