Warangal: District collector Rizwan Basha Shaik and his wife visited the Mother and Child Health Care Centre (MCH) on Saturday to see the newborn baby boy who was abandoned nine days ago by unknown persons in Kilashapur village of Raghunathapally mandal, Jangaon district. The collector’s wife grew emotional as she held the infant. As a mother herself, she empathised deeply with the baby’s need for maternal affection and even fed him milk from a bottle. The couple enquired about the baby’s health and the treatment being provided, interacting with doctors and hospital staff. Collector Basha also inspected the hospital’s ‘Baby Cradle Point’ (Ooyala) and, speaking on the occasion, said that children are a gift from God and abandoning them is heart-wrenching. He urged that those unable to care for a child should make use of the Ooyala cradle point instead of leaving infants in unsafe locations. He assured that the identities of those who use the cradle point would be kept confidential and that the government would ensure a bright future for such children. “Every living being has the right to live,” the collector said, encouraging the public to use official channels when giving up a child for adoption. He advised that people can approach the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), call the Child Helpline at 1098, or follow the legal adoption process through www.cara.wcd.gov.in. He warned that unofficial adoption is a punishable offense under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, and could result in up to three years of imprisonment or a fine of ₹1 lakh. District welfare officer Dr Florence, pediatrician Dr Yashwant, nursing officer Neelima, DCPO Ravikanth, and Child Helpline Project coordinator Ravi Kumar were among those present.
