Hyderabad: At least 11 intermediate students from a government hostel in Sangareddy district were hospitalised on Monday after consuming chicken curry served for dinner the previous night. The doctors suspected there was food poisoning at the hostel. The girl students complained of severe stomach pain and vomiting.The incident occurred at the Morgi Model School hostel in Nagalgidda mandal. According to officials, around 70 girl students are residing in the hostel. On Sunday afternoon, hostel staff reportedly brought chicken and left it in the kitchen till evening. Later, they cooked it and served it for dinner. Around midnight, several students started vomiting and complaining of stomach pain. The hostel staff immediately alerted higher officials and shifted the students to Narayankhed Area Hospital, where they received treatment. Narayankhed revenue divisional officer (RDO) D. Ashok Chakravarthy said, “A total of 11 girl students were admitted to the Area Hospital after they complained of stomach pain and vomiting. Three are still undergoing treatment and the rest have been discharged.” He said that though there was speculation that it was food poisoning, “we will conduct an in-depth inquiry into the issue by collecting information from students, hostel staff, cook and others and will initiate action.” The students reportedly brought the issue to the higher officials that they noticed the hostel staff bringing chicken on Sunday afternoon. But it was kept in the kitchen and cooked in the evening and served at dinner. The chicken was in poor condition and they noticed a foul smell when it was being washed to cook curry. It was also reported that a contractor supplied such chicken by taking more money and failed to provide fresh chicken to the hostel.
