Chennai: The People’s Union of Civil Liberties (PUCL) passed a resolution at its national convention opposing the proposal to re-open the Vedanta’s Sterlite plant in Thoothukudi, saying that it would be a health hazard to the people of the coastal town in southern Tamil Nadu.At the convention held in Ranchi, the resolution was moved by the Thoothukudi unit of the PUCL on Sunday and the same was passed unanimously in the meeting.Though the plant is now closed as per Supreme Court orders, there were moves by the management to re-open it and a committee, including professors from Anna University, had been formed to examine the possibility for the re-opening.The committee had already stated that the copper smelting plant could be opened with certain modifications.
