KAKINADA: Former BJP state president and MLC Somu Veerraju has asserted that the proposed Banakacharla irrigation project will not adversely affect Telangana’s water interests. Addressing the media at Rajamahendravaram on Saturday, Veerraju said only surplus water that would otherwise flow into the sea would be utilised under the project. He urged Telangana to cooperate with Andhra Pradesh and called on all political parties in AP to support the alliance government’s efforts.Veerraju also criticised former chief minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy for allegedly using threatening language against officials. He condemned Jagan’s recent remarks about targeting officials if he returns to power in 2029, stating that the Constitution does not allow such actions. He pointed out that several officials who supported Jagan had ended up in jail and accused the previous government (2019–2024) of fostering an anarchic regime. Taking a dig at Jagan, Veerraju mocked, “If people give him power again, will he buy ghee at ₹420 or ₹320?” He warned that unless Jagan changed his tone and approach, the BJP would respond strongly. Veerraju also questioned Jagan’s repeated claims about state debt, alleging that social pension increases from ₹2,000 to ₹3,000 during the previous regime were financed through heavy borrowing, with then finance minister Buggana Rajendranath Reddy frequently stationed in Delhi seeking loans. He further claimed that not a single irrigation project had been initiated during Jagan’s tenure. BJP district president P. Nagendra, former president Bommula Dattu, Rajamahendravaram assembly convener Yenumula Rangababu, Adabala Ramakrishna, K. Satya Sairam, Veera Veeranjaneyulu and others were present.
