Hyderabad: Rescue boats were out, motorists parked their vehicles and trudged home and water accumulated on a flyover as a second day of torrential rain struck the length and breadth of the city and wreaked havoc on Friday. Several areas experienced severe flooding and waterlogging, and traffic came to a gridlock at major junctions.Within minutes of the rainfall commencing, roads disappeared under sheets of water. Cars, bikes and autorickshaws were seen floating or getting swept away at Gachibowli, Secunderabad, Malakpet, Chatrinaka, Musheerabad, Sitaphalmandi and Kukatpally.Begumpet’s Patny Colony saw incessant flooding as drainage line works near the colony was not complete. HYDRAA commissioner A.V. Ranganath stated that a resident of the colony ahd obstructed the retaining wall works, which led to the inundation of the colony.Ranganath and Hyderabad joint commissioner of police for traffic, Joel Davis, inspected a waterlogging point at Lakdikapul.Cyberabad’s joint commissioner, traffic, Gajarao Bhupal supervised relief work at waterlogged points at Gachibowli, Kothaguda and Cyber Towers. The Rachakonda traffic police also reported traffic congestion and waterlogging.HYDRAA’s Disaster Response Force (DRF) and Monsoon Emergency Team (MET) took out rescue boats into the flooded colonies and rescued the residents of Patny Colony.In low-lying areas across the city, as distant as Malkajgiri, Tolichowki, Hakimpet, Uppal and Kongara Kalan, water entered homes and apartment cellars. Colonies received heavy inflow of flood water, and rescue workers used water pumps to pump water out of the waterlogged colonies.Not only roads, but flyovers and bridges also saw severe flooding on Friday. The Kothaguda flyover near Botanical Garden saw waist-deep flooding, with vehicles getting stuck on the bridge.While many commuters parked their vehicles and walked in knee-deep waters, others waited for hours in gridlock. Motorists were stranded for hours, with bumper-to-bumper queues stretching for kilometres.T. Shashank, a commuter said “It took me little more than two hours to go from Knowledge City to Gachibowli, a mere 5-kilometre distance. It was more than hell today.” A late report spoke of a massive traffic jam at the Ikea junction.While power was out in areas like Gachibowli, Marredpally, Koti, Uppal and several other areas, the Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) officials restored power to most areas.Several trees also fell down, causing more traffic congestion and power outages. HYDRAA’s DRF teams were quickly deployed, who cleared off the obstructions.- Hyderabad traffic police alerts, beginning at about 2 pm, indicated waterlogging at several thoroughfares located across the city indicating the spread of the problem.- The traffic police put out warning of waterlogging at Dabeerpura, Bible House at Bansilalpet in Secunderabad, Karkhana, Mahbubnagar crossroads, Chatrinaka, Malakpet, Indira Park, Mastan Café, Karbala Maidan, Chilkalguda crossroads, Tarnaka, Langer Houz- Traffic police also requested motorists to avoid the PVNR expressway-Masab Tank road- Waterlogging was reported on the Praja Bhavan flyover, the steel bridge at RTC crossroads and the Kothaguda flyover
