Spurious Toddy Consumption Fails To Subside In Nizamabad

Nizamabad:Authorities in Nizamabad district are struggling to curb the consumption of adulterated toddy. Despite offering rehabilitation services, many users find it difficult to break the habit. As a result, numerous people have suffered serious health problems, and some have even died. Tests have revealed that substances such as chloral hydrate, alprazolam and diazepam are being mixed into the toddy, posing severe health risks. Raids by the Prohibition and Excise Department show that some vendors continue to lace toddy with these drugs.Alarmingly, certain sellers claim customers specifically request the drug-laced toddy for a stronger effect. Individual tappers and several toddy cooperative societies have also been implicated in this illegal practice. Trader Srinivas Reddy told Deccan Chronicle that his father developed serious health complications after giving up spurious toddy and had to be hospitalised in Nizamabad for 10 days.Physicians advise against abruptly quitting toddy, recommending a gradual reduction to minimise withdrawal symptoms. They warn that skipping doses can intensify cravings and health risks for those addicted.Families of affected drinkers are urging the state government to expand rehabilitation services. They say withdrawal symptoms are taking a heavy toll and call for adequate medical support at primary health centres and hospitals across the district.
