Hyderabad: Cyberabad police arrested three members of the inter-state gang on charges of committing ATM thefts using gas cutters. Balanagar deputy commissioner of police (DCP) K. Suresh Kumar addressing a press conference here on Thursday said the ATM theft cases were solved through an investigation involving technical and human intelligence. Police verified footages of over 500 CCTV cameras along possible escape routes of the miscreants. The modus operandi of the known offenders was cross-checked with the suspects’ data and it helped in identifying and apprehending the accused. The stolen property worth Rs.20 lakh was recovered from the arrested individuals identified as Yasib Hussain alias Asif Haarun Khan (28) and Md. Abed (31), both natives of Haryana and Aamir Aansri (24) from Telangana.According to the DCP, on the intervening night of July 8 and 9 between 2.30 am and 3.30 am, unknown offenders gained entry into the HDFC ATM kiosk at Markhandayanagar under the Jeedimetla police station limits. The miscreants cut open the ATM machine with gas cutters and stole cash worth Rs.34.71 lakh and fled from the crime scene.Explaining the gang’s modus operandi, DCP Kumar said the gang had a history of committing multiple ATM thefts across various states in the country. “Prior to committing offence, the gang members used to split into smaller groups. After doing recce of ATM koisks located in isolated or closed areas, they used to target them. Sourcing gas cylinders and cutting machines from nearby shops or locations, the gang members were striking those ATM kiosks located in isolated places especially during the night,” he added. The accused were intercepted by the Jeedimetla police at Shahpurnagar X Roads. Police said that Yasib Hussain and Aamir Ansari became known to each other while lodged at the district jail at Narnaul in Haryana. Yasib was serving a seven-year sentence in (crime number 117/18) under sections 307, 394, 397, 398, 353, and 332 of the IPC along with sections 11 and 13 of the MCOCA Act registered at Kotwali police station in Madhya Pradesh. Aamir, meanwhile, had been convicted in a Pocso case (Cr. No. 400/2021) from the same police station and sentenced to 20 years of jail. He was later granted bail by the High Court of Gwalior Bench and relocated to Hyderabad with his family. The accused, identified as J. Kishore, allegedly murdered G. Venkata Narayana and Raju in Governorpet before fleeing.Based on CCTV footage and mobile tower data, Vijayawada police suspected Kishore had boarded a train to Hyderabad. Acting on a tip-off, Task Force personnel apprehended him in Secunderabad and alerted their counterparts in Andhra Pradesh. He was later handed over to the Vijayawada police.Bandi Sanjay gets SIT noticeHyderabad: The Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing the phone-tapping case, served a notice to Union minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Thursday, summoning him to appear as a witness.The notice directed the minister to appear at the Lake View Guest House on July 24 to record his statement. SIT officials reportedly received inputs that former SIB officers tapped the phones of Bandi Sanjay and his family members, prompting the summons.Hours after the SIT notice, the minister accused the previous BRS government of illegally intercepting the phones of political leaders.Cops trace suspects in 2 murdersHyderabad: Police are yet to identify the culprits behind two recent murders of political leaders — one in Hyderabad’s Malakpet and the other in Kulcharam, Medak.In the Malakpet murder case, the police obtained inputs about Chandu Naik’s regular activities and people who met him in recent times. Based on the call data of Chandu Naik, police intensified the probe. The police have already picked up some suspects and are questioning them.In Kulcharam, police formed special teams and sent them to different places, including Andhra Pradesh, to pick up suspects. A day before the murder, the Congress party leader met some landlords in Hyderabad. In the meeting, arguments might have taken place. While proceeding to his native place in Medak, miscreants opened fire at him, killing him on the spot.Sister robs brother’s house for betting debtHyderabad: The Jagadgirigutta police arrested a woman who burgled her elder brother’s house with her two associates after incurring a debt of Rs.5 lakh due to online betting. The woman planned the theft while visiting her parents in Karmanghat, where her brother had come to perform a car puja.According to Jagadgirigutta police, Vemula Subrahmanyam Srikanth, a resident of Shirdi Hills in Gajularamaram, had travelled with his wife and children to his parents’ home in Bhagyanagar Colony, Karmanghat, on July 5. His sister, who has been living with their parents after separating from her husband eight years ago, accompanied them.Srikanth had recently purchased a car and planned to perform a puja on Sunday. The family left for Karmanghat in a cab around 8.30 pm on Saturday.Police said the woman, harbouring resentment from earlier disputes with her brother and struggling with gambling addiction, devised the plan during the visit. She discreetly removed the house key from Srikanth’s bag and hid it in the shoe rack outside the house. Around 12.30 am, she summoned her associates—Karthik and Akhil — handed over the key, and sent them to the apartment.The duo travelled to the locked flat in Jagadgirigutta on a scooter, opened the door, and stole 12 tolas of gold, silver ornaments and cash. They then returned to Karmanghat and put the lock back.Over the next six days, police traced the suspects using CCTV footage from Jagadgirigutta and Karmanghat, which captured their movements and their return to Srikanth’s father’s home. Footage also showed them restoring the lock to its original position.Based on the evidence, police questioned the woman and she confessed. A portion of the stolen gold was pledged at a gold loan company to repay her betting debts. Police recovered part of the stolen property along with the hammer and iron rods used in the burglary. All three accused—Karthik, Akhil and the woman—were arrested on Thursday and remanded to judicial custody. The woman’s name was withheld by police.
