BRS Urges Election Commission To Drop Car Like Symbols For Local Bodies Polls

HYDERABAD: With the local body elections expected to be held soon, the BRS was back at the State Election Commission urging it to remove election symbols that are in the likeness or look similar to the party’s car symbol. In a representation to the SEC on Tuesday, the BRS said some of the free symbols in the July 7 notification by the commission bore a close resemblance to the BRS’ official symbol. This, the party said, could confuse voters into casting their vote for a candidate who gets such a similar symbol and not for the intended BRS candidates of their choice. BRS former MP Boinpalli Vinod Kumar and party general secretary Soma Bharat Kumar, in their representation, said three symbols, that of a camera, a chapati roller, and a ship, had the potential to confuse voters as they were similar in several ways to the BRS’ car symbol. They requested that these three symbols be deleted from the list of free symbols “in the interest of free and fair exercise of voters’ right to cast their vote according to their choice without confusion.” These three symbols should not be allotted to anyone in order to prevent them from being used in the upcoming ordinary elections to MPTC/ZPTC posts in Telangana, as well as in other state elections and elections to the Parliament, the BRS leaders said in their representation.
