Udupi: A 29-year-old man accused under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act allegedly attempted to attack police personnel during a spot inspection near Manipal on Saturday evening. The police immediately subdued the accused who is currently undergoing treatment at the Udupi District Hospital.According to police, a case had been registered on July 8 at the Women’s Police Station in Udupi under sections 74 and 3(5) of BNS along with Sections 7, 8, 9(M)(N), and 10 of the POCSO Act.The accused, Mohammad Danish (29), a native of Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh and presently residing in Manipal’s VP Nagar, was arrested on July 12 in connection with the case. During the course of the investigation, the police took him to the scene of the alleged offence near Tangodu 2nd Cross in Badagubettu village for a mahazar (spot inspection) on July 13.It was during this process that Danish allegedly pushed police constable Ritesh to the ground and attempted to assault him with a laterite stone. Inspector Ramachandra Nayak intervened, but Danish reportedly tried to attack him also. The police then used a baton to subdue the accused, striking him on the leg. Other officers at the scene managed to restrain and take him back into custody.Both the constable and Danish sustained injuries during the scuffle and have been admitted to the district hospital for treatment. Police said further investigation is underway.
