Hyderabad: Determination and commitment helped a student Priyanka from Warangal to excel in studies in spite of the school management expelled her after failing to pay the fee when she was studying fourth class. The same spirit has now helped her to select for the Community College Initiative Program at Bunker Hill Community College in Massachusetts, US. She will be attending the program for one year. She has to do 70 hours of internship in addition to providing 100 hundred hours of voluntary service, introducing India’s traditions to students and to learn about them besides attending computer classes. Priyanka will leave for the US on July 29 and will return after a year. The US government will bear all her expenses. She was selected based on merit in the TOEFL exam. “I was so sad when I was thrown out of the private school for not paying fees. Now I am doubly happy and proud to be going to study in the US,” she said. Priyanka ‘s felt happy after she shared the news of visiting the US. The family resides in Balanagar after migrating from Warangal. She was among the three children in the family. Her father is working as a labourer while mother works as a sweeper. Priyanka recalled that her parents wanted the children to grow up differently and admitted her to a private school, but the school management expelled her for not paying fees when she was fourth standard. “My parent’s felt sad. Even though I was young, I understood their pain. At that moment, I thought that they should never worry about me or my studies. From that day onwards, I thought about studying. I came to know about residential schools with free accommodation,” Priyanka said. She joined the residential school in Borabanda and completed the tenth exam with 90 per cent marks. “To study intermediate in a corporate college, I have to pay a lot of fees. We can’t afford it. Moreover, my father still has to take care of my younger sister and brother. After thinking about it, I collected information about Gouli Doddi Government College and joined after clearing screening and written tests,” she said. After getting 97 percent marks in Inter MEC securing 10th rank in Telangana, she got an opportunity to study at the Social Welfare College in Budvel. While she was studying first year, she got the opportunity to visit the US.
