Indian Railways Embraces AI to Prevent Accidents and Boost Safety

Every train journey whether carrying people or goods depends on one simple thing. That is safety. Indian Railways has now taken a big step to make its network even safer by introducing a new technology called Machine Vision Inspection System (MVIS). Before this system was introduced, the railway engineers and technical staff would manually inspect the trains for any faults and repairs. But now that we have got MVIS, that is not required anymore. This system uses a set of high-speed cameras placed alongside the track to inspect the underparts of the train while it is moving. Later, it uses AI to look at these images and find any faults like loose parts, missing parts or parts that are out of place. When MVIS notices something unusual, it immediately alerts the railway engineers, who can act on the warning and fix the issue before it becomes dangerous. This kind of early detection is a game changer. The first four of these smart systems are being installed on freight routes, thanks to an agreement between Indian Railways and DFCCIL. There are also plans to expand MVIS to cover passenger routes in the future. By bringing in technology like MVIS, Indian Railways is quietly transforming one of the world’s largest rail networks.
