The Supreme Court on Thursday began hearing multiple petitions challenging the Election Commission’s decision to conduct a special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar, ahead of the upcoming polls. The bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Joymalya Bagchi heard arguments from senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi, representing the EC, who raised preliminary objections. He asserted that the revision is constitutionally mandated and similar to an exercise last conducted in 2003.Over 10 petitions, including one by the Association for Democratic Reforms and several opposition MPs, seek to quash the EC’s order.Senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, for the petitioners, argued that any revision must follow provisions under the Representation of People Act.The EC said the revision will cover around 7.9 crore voters, but clarified that voter ID and Aadhaar are not being used as the sole basis.(With inputs from PTI)
