No Textbooks in First Two Weeks of New Academic Year

Kerala, known for it’s significant advancements and early adoption of various educational initiatives, is introducing another pioneering scheme. The 2025-26 academic year, which is scheduled to begin on June 2 in the state will see a different approach for learning. Instead of the traditional teaching using textbooks, social awareness classes will be given to the students during the first two weeks of the 2025-26 academic year.The initiative aims to create awareness on social issues such as drug abuse, emotional well-being, digital discipline, legal awareness and hygiene. The initiative is the first of its kind in the country. Education minister V. Sivankutty said that the students will engage in interactive sessions, discussions and workshops. Teachers across the state have undergone special training workshops for the same. The focus will be on interactive and participatory methods.Students in classes 1 to 10 will participate in the two-week sessions, while higher secondary students will have a similar programme for one week beginning on June 18. Schools will also ensure adequate time for arts, sports and other extracurricular activities.
