Civilians to be Roped in for Help

HYDERABAD: A day after Wednesday’s air raid drills in the city, officials involved with the civil defence action said that they were in the process of identifying volunteers from residential localities, resident welfare associations, who could take the role of disseminated authenticated official information, and coordinate with official agencies if any rescue, and relief efforts would be required in the event of a hostile attack.“While government agencies will be responding, the role of civilians in CD activities is vital,” a senior official said on Thursday. After having experimented using police vehicle sirens to alert people during the drills, the official said they were looking at the prospect of using the public address (PA) systems that the city police has at traffic junctions for the purpose. The PA systems would be linked them to enable them to broadcast the traditional long air raid sirens. Also being explored is putting to use mobile phone apps that can sound an air raid alarm and alert people with officials sending push messages.“We will be informing people as we make progress on these issues. The most important and vital aspects are that none should panic, and everyone should stay calm, and do not believe any rumours. Only information shared by the government, or designated officials should be trusted,” the official said.
