‘Total liquor ban in 17 religious cities and towns of Madhya Pradesh,’ says CM Mohan Yadav

Consequently, a blueprint of the new excise policy is also likely to be cleared during the state cabinet meeting on Friday. Yadav’s announcement came just ten days after he had hinted in Bhopal about a possible ban on liquor in religious towns and cities of MP.The 17 cities and towns categorised as holy (religious) by successive governments in MP between 2004 and 2013 include the CM’s home city Ujjain, Amarkantak, Maheshwar, Orchha, Omkareshwar, Mandla, Multai, Mandla (Narmadaghat), Jabalpur, Chitrakoot, Maihar, Salkanpur, Mandaleshwar, Mandsaur, Barman, and Panna.The CM’s announcement was welcomed by former MP CM and ex-union minister Uma Bharti, who is credited with bringing the BJP back to power in the state after ten years of Congress rule in 2003.She, however, added that her aim is to ensure a complete liquor ban in the state. She also recounted having freed liquor from the clutches of the mafia during her chief ministerial tenure.
