An 11-year-old boy died after falling from a human pyramid during a Dahi Handi practice session in Mumbai’s Dahisar area on Sunday night. The victim, identified as Mahesh Ramesh Jadhav, was a member of the Govinda Navtarun Mitra Mandal team and was rehearsing for Janmashtami celebrations when the incident occurred. Police said the accident took place around 10:45 pm, when Mahesh had climbed to the sixth level of the pyramid. He suddenly lost his balance and fell before he could catch the safety rope. He was rushed to Pragati Hospital, where he died during treatment. Initially, Dahisar Police registered an accidental death report. However, by Sunday afternoon, they booked Balaji alias Balu Ramesh Surnar, president of the Navtarun Mitra Mandal, for death by negligence. According to police, proper safety measures should have been in place during the practice session to prevent such incidents. Dahi Handi, a highlight of Janmashtami festivities in Maharashtra, involves teams forming tall human pyramids to break a suspended earthen pot. Despite repeated advisories on safety, accidents during both practice and the main event continue to claim lives.
